Skills USA 2019
Advertising Design
Gold Medalist Project:
Domino’s Ad
For this project I wanted to make sure that I understood the company and the feature they were offering before I began trying to emulate their style.
As part of the competition we were allotted approximately 2 hours to produce a complete advertisement that featured this hotspot offer from Domino’s.
For my first hour I did not touch my canvas, at all.
I spent the first half of the competition diligently researching Domino’s. I analyzed their own past ads, such as the style, spacing, and visual weight of their ads. I also payed special attention to the voice and feeling that I got when reading copy from the brand, and I even sough out articles about the fairly new feature itself. For my approach to work, I needed all of this information.
For the advertisement I chose a royalty photo that showed a group of people eating pizza on the floor. This image spoke to me because it exemplified the idea that Domino’s could be delivered anywhere, even places where you don’t need a chair to sit and enjoy.
I used my research to inform the voice and brand identity of the ad itself, sticking to just the three colors of the brand: red, blue, and white. I even researched past coupons so that I could include my own at the bottom of my ad: something that is basically integral to any pizza advertisement in my head.
When I received Gold for this advertisement, I was incredibly humbled. I was grateful that my research and decisions were well received, and I was proud of my contributions to the competition and grateful that I was able to compete alongside other talented students! I had a lot of fun on this project, and I’m very grateful for SkillsUSA for choosing me as their Gold Medalist for RI SkillsUSA 2019: Advertising Design.
